I was born and grew up in Novi Sad, the second-largest city in Serbia, a country in Central Europe. For that reason, this seems like a great opportunity to present freelancers who are living and working on other continents.
I studied Sociology in college and gained many practical skills in my theoretical classes. This led me to numerous travels around Europe, practicing my knowledge of the English language and communication skills.
After my bachelor studies, I started working in the City Assembly of Novi Sad, continuing to improve my basic skills of organization and communication by working with the media and citizens. During this time, I also got married, became a mother to two boys, and finished my Master’s degree in Sociology. I then switched jobs to work in marketing and public relations.
During this time, I was also writing and editing for my blog called “Zakomplikovana u borbi protiv vetrenjača” (Complicated girl in the fight against watermills), where I wrote on topics such as:
- Social politics
- Public health
- Gender equality
- Empowering women in entrepreneurship
Over time, I gained more and more invites to write for portals, where I had my own column and was able to put my name under the text. The writing included many of the topics which I had already shared on my blog and the promotion of other people’s activities, but I received no financial reimbursement.
I continued practicing my writing skills and also learned more about SEO, content writing, and growing my network of associates and like-minded people. This helped me to grow even more in terms of the quality of my writing, which has also helped give my writing more selling character.
I then started to engage with my clients and other digital marketing agencies independently. My clients were looking for a different point of view, a systematic approach to products, and a good selling storyboard. The biggest advantage of my original studies was the knowledge gained in relation to analyzing markets and campaigns, including social media strategies and marketing.
Finally, this year, I started my freelancing journey by creating profiles on platforms like Fiverr and UpWork. I have also passed some exams and continue to utilize education platforms to help me learn how to best present my knowledge and skills. I have also promoted my skills on social media, including my TikTok account, to show the value of the content I can offer as a writer.
Exiting my comfort zone is stimulating because I can see how much I can offer. I can write things that are interesting to me and learn new skills. I think that every moment in our lives is an opportunity to learn, so whenever you think there is something that will bring you good, you need to try it so you can live according to your own plans and desires.
The process of writing is exciting and scary at the same time. The possibilities given on these platforms are beyond comprehension. You have the whole world as your market, opportunities to cooperate with people around the globe, offer the best parts of yourself, and make someone happy with the skills and knowledge you have. With every project, you are learning something new about yourself, and also the topic you agreed to research in the context of your work.
Networking in the “Freelancing Mentorship with Alexandra Fasulo” Facebook group is a great way to improve your skills. It is also a great way to share our freelancing experiences, questions, and dilemmas. Now, you have the freedom to plan your time, respect your priorities and commitments, and take on all the possibilities that approach you.
Go for it, the sky’s the limit!
